How to manage risk when trading XAUUSD

Gold can move fast. Learn position sizing, stop placement and news risk basics.

Why XAUUSD needs extra care

XAUUSD often moves faster than major currency pairs. A normal-looking candle on gold can equal a large dollar move, especially during US data releases.

Start with account risk

Decide the amount you are willing to lose before thinking about profit. Many educational frameworks use 1% or less per trade for beginners.

Stop loss placement

Place the stop where the trade idea is invalid, not where the loss simply feels comfortable. Then calculate lot size from that distance.

Watch news and sessions

Gold often reacts to US CPI, NFP, Fed decisions, yields and USD moves. Liquidity is usually better during London and New York sessions.

Practical checklist

  • Check the economic calendar before trading.
  • Avoid oversized lots on small accounts.
  • Do not widen stop loss after entry.
  • Keep a journal of gold trades separately from FX pairs.
  • Demo test first if you are unfamiliar with XAUUSD contract size.
  • Gold trading is not safer just because it is popular. Risk control comes first.
